As the business world continues to evolve, circumstances can change and guide you in a different direction. Should  your goals that you provided above not transpire, what other opportunities would you explore? 

My 6-year experience in sales, marketing and business development have equipped me with insights in understanding  client needs, navigating organizational dynamics and aligning business objectives. In my immediate career path, I aim to  secure a Product Manager position within the Automotive Division of firms like A, B and C.  Here, I intend to fuse my technical expertise with my business knowledge to foster sustainable innovation in automotive  areas such as electric vehicle technology, ADAS, and Infotainment Systems. A crucial part of my role will be to integrate  sustainability into our product development processes, championing eco-friendly practices and promoting reusability of  automotive components. My action plan includes working closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Sales teams to  develop and market innovative sustainable automotive solutions that lead the industry in market share and customer  satisfaction. 

In the long-term, I aspire to become a Director of Product Innovation and Sustainability at Automotive OEMs like P, Q and R. I plan to focus on the development of groundbreaking, sustainable products that adhere to  environmental principles. 

My strategy at Kenan-Flagler would be to upskill in decision-making, strategy, and supply chain strategies essential for  transitioning into impactful product management roles. Courses like ‘Product Management’ and ‘Global Supply Chain  Management’ taught by Professors, Sridhar Balasubramanian and Jayashankar Swaminathan renowned for their diverse  industry experience would help me to deepen my understanding of market needs, enhance my technical know-how, and  refine my approach to strategic product development. Professor XXX’s course, ‘Strategic Innovation’, aligns with  my goal of driving continual product innovation and staying ahead in a competitive market. 

During my discussion with current students like ABC and PQR elaborated on development of diverse  skill sets through experiential learning at Kenan-Flagler. I am eager to be part of the Business Technology Club to network  with peers and industry leaders and upskill myself on latest innovations and challenges. Besides, I plan to actively  participate in case studies and competitions at the Consulting Club to hone critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.  Also, being part of STAR will help me to apply skills acquired in class on live business projects for corporate clients. The  multidisciplinary approach of the program would facilitate a seamless transition from sales to product management. 

In essence, my goal at Kenan-Flagler is to not only learn and grow but to also participate in discussions actively, sharing  real-world experiences and practical insights. Furthermore, my entrepreneurial experience has provided me with a  unique perspective on risk-taking, innovation, and business management. If my goals do not transpire as planned, I am prepared to pivot back into sales and marketing as a global account  manager for the strategic customers. The experience that I have built over the last few years at my current employer – PQ and previous employer – XY coupled with the learnings and skills acquired at Kenan-Flagler would help me  to land the role.

Reflect on a project or initiative you were involved in that had a significant positive impact on a community, organization, or  individual. How did this experience shape your sense of responsibility as a future leader dedicated to making a difference in the world? 

To centralize manufacturing, the management at PQ decided to relocate the cable assemblies manufacturing to a  location ~1000 km away aiming for long term cost optimization. Additionally, to address the low profitability, it sought a  30% price increase on the cable harnesses, which reached -8 % in CY21 for a $5M business. This meant that vendors like  xy would look for alternatives. This also meant that I could lose 30% of my annual revenue– a very unpleasant  situation. I was surprised that the management was willing to relinquish the $5M loss-making segment despite a very  profitable $75M global business with xy (PQ’s largest consumer durables customer). 

The daunting task was to convince Whirlpool for an immediate price increase. Engaging with various stakeholders,  including the previous account manager, global account manager, and customer revealed crucial insights. An important  finding was Whirlpool’s upcoming program replacing the entire portfolio in 12 months. At this juncture, convincing the  management to retain the business became paramount. I was also confident that a strategic price increase was essential  to ensure profitable growth without losing the business. 

I devised a strategy with a toned-down price increase and staggering it so we could close CY22 with a 2% profit margin  (compared to -8% the previous year) and close CY22 with a 6% profit margin. The goal was to ensure current profitability  and secure a foothold for future growth with Whirlpool. The management agreed to proceed ahead with the strategy if  the business turned profitable in the same year and were keen to acquire the new program only above 15% profit  margin. 

Once the management approved the strategy, I collaborated with the customer by sharing the roadmap for the price  increase, alleviating the impact. I successfully negotiated a 15% price hike, spread over three quarters. Subsequently my  focus shifted to bid for the upcoming program and secure the business. I proactively engaged with internal teams to  devise a strategy which involved suggestions of in-house alternatives for the components used and cost-effective  proposals to stay ahead of competitors. This was an intricate balancing act aimed to overcome challenges, retain  business, and position PQ for a lucrative and sustainable future with xy. 

The 12-month collaboration on the new program resulted in the successful award of business beginning Aug ‘XX,  boosting our margins to 22% — a significant achievement. This experience profoundly shaped my understanding of  leadership, emphasizing the need for a deep understanding of our decisions’ broader impacts, the importance of  building mutually beneficial relationships, and the necessity of a resilient approach to overcome challenges and drive  long-term success. 

Moving forward, I am dedicated to applying these insights in both my professional life and my commitment to making a  positive difference globally. I aim to mentor diverse engineering talents in the automotive sector, fostering a new  generation of resilient and innovative leaders. This journey has instilled in me a strong sense of responsibility to make  decisions that not only solve immediate problems but also contribute to enduring, positive change.

When my ABC passed away during my undergraduate years, I unexpectedly stepped into a leadership role in our  family’s apparel business in XYZ. My involvement initially began as a means to explore the wholesalers in  western X, while studying in yy. Initially attracted by the travel and entertainment prospects, I soon found myself  deeply immersed in the business’s intricacies, learning about vendor selection, pricing negotiations, inventory  management, and product line expansion. 

This journey transformed from a casual involvement to a serious commitment. I leveraged my engineering background  to digitize our supply chain processes, which not only streamlined operations but also curtailed revenue losses by 2%.  This experience was a far cry from the cinematic travel adventures I had imagined, evolving into a valuable lesson in  business and responsibility. 

Even though eight years have passed, and being engaged in other pursuits, I still play a supportive role in the family business, with my cousins, also engineering students, now taking the lead with vendor interactions. How did this experience shape your sense of responsibility as a future leader dedicated to making a difference in the world?

The pandemic deepened educational disparities for X’s vulnerable children, and the lockdown rendered government schools silent. The absence of steady income for y drivers and auto-rickshaw operators left their children uncertain regarding their educational continuity. There was no hope for these underprivileged kids as government schools needed more means and infrastructure to connect with the students digitally.

It was in this hour of need that I, alongside a team of compassionate volunteers, joined XX NGO. We were committed to a year-long mission of educating 92 kids for a scholarship that could transform their lives. It gave them support, a laptop, and a monthly stipend of INR 2000 ($25) for four years. Our teaching journey entailed meticulously preparing notes, creating videos, and delivering sessions three hours/week. Ultimately, 20% of the students successfully secured the scholarships.

Teaching the kids has been transformative, equipping me with the skills to embrace individuals from diverse backgrounds and celebrate their unique identities. I learned that while access to resources can propel one to excellence, those less privileged may struggle to keep pace. My GPA rose from X to X, earning me a CGPA of 8.66 and a rank of 6th in Computer Science, exemplifying my preparedness for a challenging curriculum at Kenan-Flagler.

GRE Verbal: The V153 does not reflect my verbal skills. I aced TOEFL’s writing (30/30) and speaking (29/30) sections.
